CLIENT: Railcorp
COMMENCEMENT DATE: June 2013
COMPLETED: December 2013
Central Station is located at the southern end of the Sydney central business district and is the largest and busiest railway station in New South Wales.
The station and clocktower form a significant part of Sydney’s history. Construction began in 1915 and it was opened in 1921. Standing over 70 metres high, the clocktower signified the rapid growth of Sydney in those historic times.
HIGHLIGHTS/SCOPE OF WORKS:
- The work involved desalinating, cleaning and replacing stone on the walls along Pitt St, and included the bridge across Eddy Ave. The cleaning was done using the Façade Gommage® cleaning system. Central Station is the transport hub of Sydney and restoring these walls involved significant vehicular and pedestrian protection. The Central Station project was not only a unique example of stonework conservation but also an example of how to set up works to fully protect the public from the debris and byproducts caused by the restoration work.
- HBS was successful in the next two stages of work, totalling a contract value of over $20 million. Restoration of the clocktower and the viaduct commenced in late 2009 and in the middle of 2010 respectively. These projects were successfully completed in late 2011.
